The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are sponsoring a summer internship in Washington DC for college students interested in careers in public service. Application deadline is December 7.
If you haven’t already seen it, check out the Global Incident Map. The site features a Google maps-based interactive display of recent terrorist incidents and other suspicious events (http://www.globalincidentmap.com/home.php). One glance shows there is much more going on in the world than the headlines can handle.
The Washington Times details an FBI Advisory on terrorist plans to attack the intelligence training center at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. Sixty terrorists from Iraq and Afghanistan were to be smuggled into the country with the help of Mexican drug runners. Some of the terrorists are allegedly already in a safe house inside the US. Probably not very safe for them right now though.
The New Yorker ran an in depth article on the complexities of the “Sunni Awakening” in western Iraq. It illustrates the tolerance for ambiguity that policymakers must learn to accept when getting involved in tribal politics.
A series of recent articles highlight progress in Iraq. On Tuesday the New York Times ran a lengthy report, “Baghdad’s Weary Start to Exhale as Security Improves.” On Friday the Washington Post reported on the gradual re-emergence of social life in the Iraqi capital. Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. James E. Cartwright USMC who visited Iraq for Thanksgiving said the changes are taking “permanent hold.”
AP has a great feature on the diary of Tanja Nijmeijer, a Dutch woman who joined the Colombian guerilla group FARC and found that life as a revolutionary wasn’t as romantic as she had believed it might be. “In the diary, Nijmeijer abhors the strict discipline imposed by FARC's male commanders — no smoking, no phone calls, no romantic relationships without their consent. She says the rank and file are hungry and bored, and describes FARC leaders as both materialistic and corrupt.”
Lastly, the New York State DMV has denied a request from a former law enforcement officer to have vanity license plates that say “Get Osama” because they are “offensive.” The most offensive thing about that message is the fact that it is six years since 9/11 and we still need to get him.
